Brief History of the Tibetan Treatment
                                                                              by Mohammad Shaikh Farid
In the year 639 A.D. Srangat Sen Gampo brought the Buddhism to Tibet from India. He had founded the famous city named ‘Lahma’. Srangat Sen had invented the Tibetan alphabets also. He had brought these letters form the Sangskrit Debnagri letters. After arrival of the Buddhism in Tibet the treatment method introduced by Buddha became the fundamental method besides other contemporary treatment methods at that time. This is the method which is renowned as ‘Tibetan Treatment’ at present.
Dr. Yeshe Donden who is famous among the Tibetan physicians and respectable to all is the personal physician of Dalai Lama. Many famous persons of the world also got his treatment. He opined, “Though this treatment method commenced from the period of Buddha Dev, in spite of that the Tibetan treatment had properly started from the period of the ‘Medicine Buddha’.”
‘Men La’, who is colloquially renowned as ‘Medicine Buddha’, is actually the incarnation of Buddha. Most of the Tibetans believe that this ‘Medicine Buddha’ is the initiator of this treatment method. According to the doctrine of Buddhism, a Medicine Buddha will be born in every era.
There is a story prevailing in Tibet. In the 2nd century of the Christian era a lady doctor went to Tibet from India. One of her associates got married with the princess of there and became royal physician. At that time physicians were most respectable in Tibet. This is the physician who had introduced the original Tibetan treatment in Tibet. In 17th century during the period of 5th Dalai Lama the first college of Tibetan treatment was established in Lahma. Then it was not being taught as a course for a fixed duration. 300 Tibetan saints were dedicated to make the people cured. Consulting the ancient records and documents they were to collect various treatment methods and teach them to the students. The students were also comprised in this group. At that time outsiders had no right of entrance here. These saints were used to move to the fields, banks of rivers and ponds, to the forests and jungles as well as to the caves of the Himalayas in search for trees/plants, barks, twigs flowers, fruits creepers and leaves etc to get the original medicines.
The Lahma Astro Medical Centre was established in 1916 during the 13th Dalai Lama. In this year for the first time the outsider students got admitted here. At the same time ladies got permission to study this theory for the first time. It is mentionable here that there was no permission for the ladies to study this theory before this time.
